Appleby set a tournament record with six consecutive birdies to share the lead after the first round of the Kemper Insurance Open in Maryland.

Australian Appleby, the 1998 winner, started on the back nine and birdied holes 12 to 17 - including a chip-in from 12 yards at the 16th - in a six-under-par round of 65 that tied him with Chris DiMarco and JJ Henry.

The birdie streak broke the Kemper record of five set by four players, most recently Neal Lancaster in 1998.

Lee Porter, Bob Estes and New Zealand's Frank Nobilo were one stroke back at 66.

Phil Mickelson, by far the tournament's headline attraction, mixed great drives and iron work with poor putting to finish with a 68.
