The Archbishop of Kenya, Bishop David Gitari of Nairobi, yesterday told the Lambeth Conference how deeply shocked he and his fellow-bishops from Kenya and Tanzania were to learn of the bombs which had exploded that morning in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, writes Robert Nowell from Canter- bury. "To hear of bombs exploding in places with which we are very familiar is very shocking indeed," the bishop said.

Emphasising that they could not resolve political differences by using violence, he said: "Those responsible for this should hear that the entire world gathered here condemns them for the action they have taken."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, sent the governments of the United States, Kenya and Tanzania a message in the name of the conference condemning the bombings unreservedly.
