The Archbishop of Armagh has condemned those responsible for the murder of a man who was beaten to death in Co Monaghan on Saturday.

I hope that those who carried out this atrocious crime will soon be apprehended and brought to justice
Archbishop Seán Brady

Dr Seán Brady said the death of Paul Quinn (21) was "a barbaric deed that should be seen for what it is - evil and inexcusable, causing revulsion and shame in all right-minded people".

Mr Quinn, who was from Cullyhanna in south Armagh, was beaten in a barn near the Border on Saturday. He died later in hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Dr Brady said: "The brutal murder of Paul Quinn has shocked and appalled a whole community. I offer my sympathy to his grieving parents and family. It shows a total lack of respect for the God-given gift of human life.

He appealed to those with information about the killing, saying they have "a duty before God to pass it on to the gardaí or PSNI.

"The tyranny of violence and intimidation must be defeated," he added.

"The Quinn family have pleaded that there should be no reprisal for Paul's death. I appeal for that call to be totally respected," Dr Brady said.

Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing for anyone who travelled on the Castleblaney - Newtownhamilton road between 4pm and 7pm last Saturday October 20th to contact them on 042 9740668.
