It has been confirmed that a suspicious device found in Limerick earlier today was a bomb and contained 1lb of explosives.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out three controlled explosions on the device which was spotted under a car in Limerick city earlier this afternoon.

The area around Keane Street on the Killalee was sealed off while the bomb unit carried out the explosion.

Gardaí believe it may have fallen off a car.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "A garda investigation is under way. We are not ruling anything out but there is nothing to indicate it was linked to any paramilitary organisation."
