New York - Police were searching yesterday for the leader of a smuggling ring which forced dozens of deaf mute Mexicans into servitude selling trinkets on the streets of New York.

Seven people have been arrested on charges of forcing the immigrants to work for them. Officials who rescued 57 people from two cramped apartments in the New York City borough of Queens over the weekend said there were indications that they were kidnapped and smuggled into the US from Mexico through California and Texas. -
