The Abbey Theatre has received over €1 million in additional capital funding this year, as part of an extra € 7.5m for capital projects all over Ireland awarded by Minister for the Arts John O'Donoghue.

The new capital grants offered this year are to buy equipment or help essential refurbishment of existing buildings, as well as to upgrade artist's equipment, buy administrative equipment or for building work.

The Arts Council announced the grants to 250 organisations yesterday, ranging from €440 to Boyle Arts Festival to the Abbey grant of €1,084,000.

Other capital funding provided by the Arts Council included: Arts and Disability Ireland €38,120; Association of Professional Dancers, €25,000; Axis Arts Centre, Ballymun, €20,000; Backwater Artists Group, €86,000.

County councils were also awarded capital grants for specific projects, from € 807 to Meath County Council, to € 100,000 to Clare County Council.
