The project to establish an Irish Academy for the Performing Arts, as announced in 2000 by the then ministers for Education and Science and Arts and Heritage, is not to go ahead, The Irish Times has learned.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education and Science confirmed that the department is "in discussion" with the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, "with reference to transferring IAPA to their aegis".

The spokesperson declined to comment on the implications for the €44.4 million allocated to the project three years ago, or the site which is on the campus of Dublin City University, where the headquarters of the new academy were to be built.

All aspects of the project, including its nodal nature, and the governing structures which were being put in place (the post of President was advertised late last year), are now up for reconsideration.
