A special sitting of Cookstown Magistrates Court is to be held to hear charges against an Irish Guardsman arising out of an incident at a pre-Christmas party in the Co Tyrone town. There are 47 prosecution witnesses.

Mr Rodney Thomas McNamee (22), of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, is pleading not guilty to assaulting three fellow soldiers, causing one of them actual bodily harm.

Mr McNamee, from the Castlederg area of Co Tyrone, also denies charges of being drunk in charge of a loaded firearm and possessing the weapon in suspicious circumstances.

He was remanded on bail yesterday until September 26th.

The charges are linked to an incident in the Royal Irish Regiment base at Chapel Street, Cookstown, last November 25th.
