Members of the ASTI will today begin balloting on whether or not to accept a Labour Court package to end the deadlock in their pay dispute with the Government.

The 17,000-strong secondary teachers union will also be polled on whether to co-operate with this summer's Leaving and Junior Certificate examinations.

The union’s annual conference in Galway last week recommended rejection of the court's pay proposals but did not offer a recommendation on the possible exams ban.

The poll will take a fortnight to complete, with the results not expected until early May.
