The National Executive of the ASTI has voted against talks with the Government and the other teachers' unions but has called for direct talks with the Taoiseach.

Members of the executive voted by 88 to 72 today not talk with the Government, the Teachers' Union of Ireland and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation on a new system of paid break-time supervision.

The executive also voted unanimously to ballot ASTI members in September on the next stage of industrial action.

A spokeswoman told ireland.comthe executive felt that teachers had quite a lot on with end-of-year exams and that waiting until after the summer holidays would give ASTI the chance to canvass members on their preferred action.
