A small, homemade bomb exploded outside a French bank in northern Athens early on today, causing minor damage but no injuries.

"An anonymous call was made to two local TV stations warning of a time bomb placed at the BNP Paribas branch [in the northern Athens suburb] of Maroussi," police said.

The caller did not say who was responsible for the attacks.

Several fringe groups, including anarchist and leftist groups, regularly attack government buildings or state offices, usually causing minor material damage.

Police cordoned off the area after the call.
