Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting both hit centuries as Australia staged a brilliant fightback with both bat and ball on day two of the third Test against India in Melbourne.

Hayden struck a superb 136 while captain-elect Ponting compiled an unbeaten 120 as Australia closed on 317 for three. That is just 49 runs short of India's first innings' total having earlier dismissed the tourists in double-quick time.

India resumed on 329 for four but wickets tumbled regularly and they were all out for 366. India skipper Sourav Ganguly (37) sparked the collapse when he was caught in the gully by Justin Langer off the bowling of Brett Lee to leave the tourists on 350 for five.

Parthiv Patel, Ajit Agarkar, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Ashish Nehra then followed in quick succession wickets as India lost their last nine wickets for just 88 runs.

Australia began their reply briskly but lost the wicket of Langer for 14 when he hit Agarkar straight to Sachin Tendulkar at gully.

That proved only a temporary blip, however, as Hayden and Ponting joined forces to put on a stand of 234 until the former Hayden was eventually trapped lbw by Kumble after hitting 17 fours and a six in his 17th Test century.

India also succeeded in dismissing the fast-scoring Adam Gilchrist - promoted to number four in an attempt to increase the run rate - for 14 in the final session but they could find no way to dislodge the in-form Ponting.

Following his 242 in the second Test, Ponting notched his 20th Test century, hitting 10 fours in a 214-ball knock, and was still there at stumps with Damien Martyn (seven not out).

They trail India 1-0 in the four-match series after losing the second Test by four wickets in Adelaide.
