A Garda who went to rescue a man from hanging and received a black eye in the process was awarded £6,514 compensation and costs at the High Court yesterday.
Garda David Walsh (50) went to the man's rescue in the Bridewell Garda station in Cork on February 21st, 1996.
Mr Justice Budd said that Garda Walsh was trying to help the man who was on the floor when he was struck - probably with a shoe - and sustained a black eye.
The rescued man also left bite marks on Garda Walsh's arm.
