One of the North’s leading photographers, Mr Martin Wright, died suddenly today after suffering a heart attack.

The 49-year-old father of two was owner of Pacemaker Press, the Belfast photographic agency whose images of the Northern troubles repeatedly hit the front pages of newspaper and magazines around the world for nearly three decades.

Mr Gerry Fitzgerald - picture editor of the Belfast Telegraph, who worked alongside his friend "Marty" Wright during the height of the violence in the 1970s - said: "He was probably one of the most talented photographers around and a mentor to many others."

Mr Wright's pictures captured the best and worst of Northern Ireland for years and he won so many photographic awards people lost count of the number.

He worked up to the last, taking photographs at an assignment in Belfast last night, while getting ready to go on holiday at the weekend with his wife.

Mr Fitzgerald said: "Even though he owned the business he was never afraid to go out on the most menial photographic assignment."
