A judge yesterday turned down a bail application by a security guard charged with the manslaughter of Sgt Andrew Callanan at Tallaght Garda station.

Mr Daniel O'Toole (35), of Donamore Crescent, Tallaght, was charged with manslaughter and arson at the station on July 21st.

At Dublin District Court yesterday Judge William Early refused to grant bail after gardai said they believed Mr O'Toole would not turn up for trial based on a comment he had made to a friend.

"He mentioned to a friend he was planning to take his kids to England the day before this incident", Det Insp Martin McLaughlin told the court.

Defence solicitor Mr Bobby Eager said things had "moved along" since the fire. He added that Mr O'Toole had facilitated his initial arrest by agreeing over the phone where he would meet gardai.

Judge Early said that he did not think it appropriate to grant bail in view of the seriousness of the charges. He remanded Mr O'Toole in custody for two weeks.
