The Bank of England today cut Britain's interest rates by a quarter point to 5.75 per cent - the first rate change for a year and the first cut since June 1999.

Economists had predicted the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee would follow recent interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve with a quarter-point cut of its own, given the threat from the US slowdown and a benign domestic inflation outlook.
