A barman who was shot in the stomach during a raid by an armed gang was off the danger list at Cork University Hospital yesterday. Mr Patrick Kennedy (24) was shot at point-blank range when he refused to hand over the takings at the family-run pub, the Cruiscin Lan, at Douglas Street early yesterday.

It is believed three raiders concealed themselves in a laneway adjoining the pub and broke in through a door at about 3.20 a.m. Two of them brandished sawn-off shotguns, and the third was armed with a handgun.

Mr Kennedy and his mother, Kathy, as well as other bar workers, were in the pub when the raiders burst in, demanding money. They threatened Mr Kennedy and, when he refused to hand over the cash, one of the men shot him in the stomach. The raiders fled with less than £200 in cash.
