British ale-drinkers have persuaded brewing giant Bass to reduce the strength of their favourite tipple - so it no longer gives them hangovers.
Fans of Caffrey's said they loved the taste and texture of the premium ale, which has been a top seller since it was launched seven years ago.
But they complained that the 4.9 per cent - strength brew had too much of a kick to drink in large quantities. Drinkers questioned by the brewer also admitted dreading its morning-after effects, saying it stopped them drinking more of their favourite pint.
Now Bass says it has listened to its customers and will swap the original drink for a 4.2 per cent version.
Bass said its researchers found that fans of the drink said they liked to drink it on social occasions but that it was too strong. The research found thatdrinkers expected it to be about the same strength as Guinness - 4.1 per cent.
The Caffrey's brand is also being used to sponsor the forthcoming British Lions rugby tour of Australia this summer.
