LONDON - Britain's Labour Party has tried to influence the result of a BBC annual award of person of the year by sending a note to all its members urging them to vote for the Labour leader, Mr Tony Blair.

The BBC's flagship news and current affairs programme, Today, stopped canvassing opinion yesterday for who should be shortlisted for the award after discovering the Labour Party note, which the radio described as an "organised attempt" to "distort" the poll.
