Boyle, Co Roscommon, is the setting every Saturday morning for one of the many farmers' markets that have sprung up in the last few years.

However, Boyle market is unusual in that it takes place in the courtyard of one Ireland's very few grand urban houses - the King House. On Saturday September 2nd, the Una Bhan Tourism Co-Operative Society will hold a Heritage Day in the grounds to showcase ancient arts and crafts.

It is an attempt to show a new generation how the products at the market are traditionally produced. To achieve the atmosphere the stallholders and their suppliers will be wearing authentic costume and plying their trade in the old way.

Visitors this Saturday, however heavy their shopping bag from the market, should not stop there but visit the King House itself, a marvellous example of what can be done when restoration experts receive support.

The story of its saving is a tale of determination in the face of huge odds. The house was literally an empty ruin and ignored and neglected by the State as a reminder of landlordism.

Built around 1730 by Sir Henry King as a residence displaying the status, wealth and power of the King family, they moved out to nearby Rockingham at the beginning of the 19th century. It then became the barracks of the Connaught Rangers, who were there from 1788 to 1922, until taken over by the Irish Army. To day it hosts exhibitions, concerts and recitals as well as a museum on 18th century Irish life.
