Sugar beet producers have demanded a meeting with Greencore and have sought a commitment to the growers who supplied the Carlow sugar factory which will close on March 11th.

Nearly 900 growers met in Carlow last week to vent their anger at what they saw as a lack of commitment to them by Irish Sugar, the subsidiary of Greencore, which announced the Carlow closure in January.

Their anger was further fuelled by statements to a Dáil committee by Greencore chief executive David Dilger last week indicating that Greencore saw growers as being ultimately responsible for the transport of the crop to Mallow.

While the IFA and the company have been in negotiation over compensation payments to cover some of the increased costs in transport, these payments would only cover the next three years.
