Limerick Harbour Commissioners yesterday celebrated their 150th year with what may be their final annual general meeting before their responsibilities are taken over by Shannon Estuary Ports, a new commercial company set up under the Harbour Bill, 1996. Mr Bill Davoren, a former president of the Limerick Council of Trade Unions, was elected president, and Mr Pat Hayes became vice president.

Mr Davoren said that it was hoped to make Shannon Ireland's global port. In 1995, throughput tonnage had grown to 8.06 million tonnes. This compared with 450,000 tonnes in 1966.
