Birds stolen from Dublin Zoo

Dublin Zoo is appealing for the return of two Moluccan cockatoo birds which were stolen on Tuesday night

Dublin Zoo is appealing for the return of two Moluccan cockatoo birds which were stolen on Tuesday night. The birds may be in poor health as they have a nervous temperament and are unlikely to have eaten or drunk since they were taken.

The birds, Seram and Ambon, are of little monetary value and would be difficult to sell, according to Mr David Field, assistant director of the zoo. Although Moluccan cockatoos are rare in the wild, those in captivity are not. He added the birds could be dangerous if not handled correctly.

Staff discovered the birds were gone on Wednesday morning. Padlocks and cages where they had been kept were cut and their feathers were scattered around the bird house. Mr Field said he suspected the birds may have been injured while being taken.

Gardai are investigating.
