The colony of grey seals that inhabit the Blasket Islands, Co Kerry is now in serious danger of becoming extinct according to the Irish Seal Sanctuary.

Ms Pauline Beades of the Sanctuary said "the sustained attacks over the years are bringing the grey seal to the point of extinction".

"The latest gut wrenching images of the slaughter of these seals serves to highlight the vulnerability of the species", she added.

The sanctuary also called for a National Marine Conservation Centre to help "bring marine life to the fore of peoples concerns and affections".
