Body of Dublin climber recovered from mountain

The body of an experienced Dublin climber was recovered from the Connor Pass area of Co Kerry on Saturday.

The body of an experienced Dublin climber was recovered from the Connor Pass area of Co Kerry on Saturday.

The man, in his late 40s, was with a large group of walkers who had set out from the Cloghane side of the pass towards the village of Anascaul on Saturday morning.

It is understood the man became separated from the group, but this was not noticed for some time.

Kerry Mountain Rescue was alerted by gardaí shortly after 6pm. A search of the area by 25 members got under way, and the body of the man was discovered at 9pm at an area known as Macha na Bo.

The body was apparently swept down by a stream, said Brendan Coffey, a spokesman for the Kerry Mountain Rescue, yesterday.

The body was brought down at 11pm, and a postmortem was due to take place at Kerry General Hospital yesterday. Gardaí are also investigating.

The man's name has not been released, but climbing sources said he was very experienced and had walked and climbed abroad on a number of occasions.

Conditions on Saturday would have been wet and misty.
