An Irish Marine Emergency Service helicopter had joined the search for Father James Devoy, aged 50, whose car was found in the seaside village of Bunmahon on Monday evening. He had last been seen earlier that day when he celebrated 9.30 a.m. Mass in Caim, about five miles from Enniscorthy, where he had been a curate for the past 11 years.

A Garda spokesman at Tramore said his body was found at about 4 p.m. in the sea close to the cliffs near Bunmahon, and was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for a post-mortem.

From Baldwinstown in south Wexford, he was ordained in the Ferns diocese in 1974 and was previously based at the Mission House in Enniscorthy. He also taught religion at Tacumshane Vocational School.
