A bogus hackney cab driver had fake tax and insurance discs on his car window and shotgun cartridges in the boot, Dublin District Court heard yesterday.

Mr David Reid (31), Fatima Mansions, Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of the cartridges, fraudulent use of a hackney plate, having a stolen insurance disc and using a fake tax disc.

The court heard the insurance disc was one of 30,000 stolen from a printers while the tax disc was counterfeit. The hackney plates were legitimate but belonged to an ex-partner of Mr Reid's sister. Although he knew about the cartridges, it was not his intention to put them to any use, Judge Cormac Dunne was told. His counsel said he had planned to apply for a hackney licence and the garda who stopped him found a partly filled-in application form. Judge Dunne adjourned the case to October 23th to see how he behaved.
