Postal deliveries across Northern Ireland were severely disrupted today by a bomb alert.

Postal deliveries across Northern Ireland were severely disrupted today by a bomb alert.

The main sorting office at Mallusk, Co Antrim, was evacuated throughout the night following a telephone warning that a bomb had been planted in the building.

Royal Mail said 200 staff were out of the building between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., when an extensive police search failed to find anything and the alert was declared a hoax.

The alert caused major disruption to deliveries, but Royal Mail said staff were "pulling out all the stops" to restore normal service as soon as possible.
