BEIRUT - Investigators yesterday sifted through the rubble of a bomb blast at the American University in Beirut, as a veil of silence descended on the first attack on a US institution here for at least four years.

Unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle hurled an explosive device on to the university campus in the early hours of yesterday morning, and it detonated between two buildings housing teachers and their families, police said. There were no casualties.

The blast comes as Lebanon is in the process of attracting funds from around the world for a rebuilding process following the 1975-1990 civil war.
