A Delta Airlines plane with 147 people on board has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport as a result of a suspected bomb scare.
A note scrawled on a piece of toilet paper sparked the bomb alert forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing. The written threat was discovered in a toilet by a crew member more than two hours into the ten hour non-stop flight
Flight DL27 was en route to Atlanta from Frankfurt when it made the emergency landing at Shannon at 12:38 p.m. All the passengers have been taken off the aircraft and the plane has been moved to a remote part of the airport.
A spokewoman for Shannon's operator, Aer Rianta, said the gardaí are investigating the matter and will follow the procedure of not searching the plane's scheduled flight time has elapsed. The plane was expected to land in Atlanta at 8 p.m. Irish time.
Gardaí confirmed that the evacuation was "very orderly" and that there was no panic. No one was injured during the evacuation and no one required medical attention. Shannon airport remained fully operational during the emergency and no flight delays were reported.
