SEVERAL hundred people took part in a peace march in Cork yesterday organised by the Lord Mayor, Mr Joe O'Callaghan, to express sympathy for the victims of the Canary Wharf bombing and call for a cessation of violence.
The marchers, who included Democratic Left TD Ms Kathleen Lynch, former Senator John A. Murphy, several councillors and the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, Dr Robert Warke, walked from Patrick Street to the City Hall. They heard Mr O'Callaghan declare that their aim was to send a very clear message from the people of Cork that they did not want a return to violence and that they totally condemned the London bombing.
"The days of violence are gone forever, and we, the people, don't want them back, and we don't want anybody to resurrect them in our name", said Mr O'Callaghan, adding that nothing justified the taking of human life.
Following prayers for peace led by Dr Warke, a book of condolences was opened in the City Hall.
