BONN The German government has called on Hamburg to ban political activity by the international spokesman for the Marxist rebel group involved in Perti's hostage crisis, a spokesman said yesterday.

The move followed a Peruvian media report that Lima's Foreign Ministry had asked Germany to cancel political asylum status granted in 1993 to Mr Isaac Velazco. As the main spokesman of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, Mr Velazco gave news conferences in several European cities and issued regular statements on behalf of the 14 rebels while they were inside the Japanese ambassador's home in Lima.

In Copenhagen Danish police said they had ended a brief occupation of Peru's consulate general by demonstrators protesting the death of the Peruvian rebels in the storming of the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima.
