Australia and Spain were the runners-up.

British visitors represent 55.8 per cent of all overseas visitors to Ireland. In 2000, there were almost 3.5 million British visitors to Ireland, worth £873 million to the Irish economy.

Irish born television star Graham Norton presented the award to Bord Fáilte Britain director, Mr John Greene.
