Middlesbrough have completed the double signing of Malcolm Christie and Chris Riggott from Derby for a combined fee which could rise to stg£5million.

The deal is worth stg£3million immediately, with Christie signing for Boro straight away and Riggott joining initially on loan with a guaranteed permanent transfer by April.

Christie signed for Derby from Conference side Nuneaton for stg£50,000 in 1998 while Riggott - a central defender - came through the ranks at his hometown club.

Christie, an England Under-21 international, made his Rams debut in January 1999 as a substitute against Sheffield Wednesday.

Riggott broke in to the Rams' senior side during the 2000-2001 campaign and earned a call-up to the England Under-21 side and the Player of the Year award in his first season at the club.
