A boxer who hopes to represent Ireland in the Olympics in 2000 has had his sentence for having 22 ecstasy tablets adjourned for a year in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Mark Sweeney (25), of Drumcairn Avenue, Fettercairn, and his then girlfriend were stopped and searched by gardai in Westmorelaad Street on April 16th, 1995. They were taken to Pearse Street Garda station where the girl handed over 22 tablets. Sweeney took responsibility.

Judge Kevin Haugh ordered him to pay £50 a month to a charity dealing with drug rehabilitation. If he stayed away from drugs in the meantime, the Probation Act would be applied.
