Yet again Irish boxers fly the Olympic flag as the three medals from the ring place Ireland in the company of Austria and Serbia at the close of the Beijing Games today.
The medals came courtesy of Kenneth Egan (silver), Paddy Barnes (bronze) and Darren Sutherland (bronze).
Historically boxing is Ireland's most successful Olympic sport with 12 of the country's 23 medals coming in the ring.
In terms of medals won, it represents Ireland's third most successful Games ever, behind the 1956 (five medals) and 1996 (four) teams. Though the latter was subsequently tarnished by Michelle Smyth de Bruin's doping controversy.
China's haul of 51 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals places them top of the table with a total of 100.
The US finished in second place with 110 medals overall, however their total included only 36 gold and 38 silver medals.
The Russian Federation finished third while Britain's impressive tally of 19 gold medals places them fourth ahead of the London 2012.
Earlier today, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge declared the "truly exceptional" Beijing Games closed.
"You have shown us the unifying power of sport," he told competitors packed in to the National Stadium. "The Olympic spirit lives in the warm embrace of competitive rivals from nations in conflict. Keep that spirit alive when you return home.
"These were truly exceptional Games.
"And now, in accordance with tradition, I declare the Games of the XXIX Olympiad closed, and I call upon the youth of the world to assemble four years from now in London to celebrate the Games of the XXX Olympiad."
