London - A four-year-old boy who had a bone marrow transplant has saved the life of his new-born brother by acting as a donor in a world-first operation carried out at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, in London.

Owen and Niall Vincent made medical history when Owen, himself a bone marrow recipient from a partial-match donor, donated his bone marrow to his baby brother in an operation three months ago, just 24 hours after Niall was born. The operation - reported last night on BBC TV's QED programme - is the first to be attempted where the donor had had a partial-matched transplant himself.
