Gardai have urged skateboarders to be extra vigilant following the death of a nine-year- old boy who was struck by a car while playing on a board with a friend.

Anthony Bowen, of Barrack Green, Kinsale, Co Cork, was knocked down on Thursday evening while skateboarding at Catholic Walk, a residential area near his home.

The fourth-class pupil at Summercove National School in Kinsale was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

His six-year-old friend was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The driver of the car, who is a local man, was taken to hospital where he was treated for shock. Gardaí are set to interview the man in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Cork are calling on children and teenagers who skateboard to avoid main streets and busy traffic areas.
