A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was killed while crossing a road in Co Limerick yesterday morning

A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was killed while crossing a road in Co Limerick yesterday morning. The accident occurred in the townland of Dirreen, between Athea and Glin, at about 8am, when he was hit by a van, a Garda spokeswoman said.

Jeremiah Carmody, Dirreen, Athea, Co Limerick, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital. The van driver was not injured.

The main road from Athea to Glin was closed for several hours after the crash to allow gardaí carry out a technical examination. The 10-year-old was the second Limerick child killed on Irish roads in recent weeks. Last month six-year-old Katelyn McNamara from O'Malley Park, Limerick, died after she was knocked down while crossing the road in the Ballybunion seaside resort in Co Kerry.

Meanwhile, gardaí have named the man who died in a single-vehicle road crash in Athlone last Saturday morning as Jason Daly (19), Dysart, Co Roscommon.
