Brendan Smyth extradition likely

The paedophile priest, Brendan Smyth, is to be released from Magilligan prison in Co Derry on Friday

The paedophile priest, Brendan Smyth, is to be released from Magilligan prison in Co Derry on Friday. But Smyth (68) will be taken straight from prison to face extradition proceedings at nearby Limavady District Court.

The North's DPP will apply for his extradition to the Republic on more than 60 warrants alleging paedophile offenees in Cos Dublin, Cork, Cavan, Kerry and Mayo. Smyth is not expected to oppose the application and will waive his right to remain in custody for another 15 days to lodge an appeal.

After the brief court hearing he will be driven across the Border and is expected to appear in a Dublin court later on Friday.

Smyth, a member of the Norbertine Order, based at Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott, Co Cavan, was in prison for a litany of offences against children in west Belfast over a 20-year period.
