The British authorities and public should show the same concern for the plight of Ms Roisin McAliskey as they had demonstrated for that of au pair Louise Woodward, argued Mr Labhras O Murchu (FF).

A report based on an inquiry chaired by a former United States Attorney General, Mr Ramsay Clarke, had concluded that there was no factual basis for her arrest, detention or extradition, said Mr O Murchu. It had also warned that unless she was released quickly the case would case enormous damage to the peace process. According to Mr Clarke's report, this woman's arrest and detention were politically motivated, Mr O Murchu said.

Has Britain already forgotten the outrageous miscarriages of justice against Irish people, cases such as the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four? he asked. Given the concern which Britain has always shown for her own citizens worldwide, as exemplified in the Louise Woodward case, could she not show more sensitivity to other nationals? Fianna Fail colleague Mr Michael Finneran said he wanted to support the justified expression of concern about the case.
