A taxi driver has told police the motorist, driving a metallic dark green saloon car, was "thrashing" his arms around inside the car and swerving at speeds of 30 to 50 mph.

The car was being driven south of Soham in Cambridgeshire towards Newmarket on the A142 on the evening of August 4th around the time the girls were last seen.

Det Chief Insp Andy Hebb told reporters: "As he followed the car the taxi driver realised there were other people inside the vehicle. As he closed upon the vehicle he saw what he believed to be a child in the front passenger seat and another in the back of the car".

The potentially vital new witness told police the car was either a Peugeot 405 or a Vauxhall Vectra.

The taxi driver became aware of the car at around 7 p.m. at a roundabout next to the garage where there had earlier been unconfirmed sightings of the two girls.

Mr Hebb urged the driver to "contact police immediately so we can eliminate him from our inquiries".
