Rangoon - Burma's military government and the opposition held separate rallies yesterday to mark the 51st anniversary of the country's independence from British colonial rule, and attacked each other's political agendas.

The Premier and senior general Mr Than Shwe warned that the opposition National League for Democracy party faced the wrath of Burmese people for attempting to disrupt national objectives.

He was referring to mass rallies organised by semi-government organisations in 19 cities nationwide in September and October calling for the disbanding of the NLD and deportation of the party's leader, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi.
