The RUC was last night investigating an apparent gun attack on a bus containing 40 schoolchildren in Co Armagh.

Pupils from St Pauls Secondary School in Cam lough escaped injury after two bullets smashed windows near the village of Meigh, south of Newry, shortly before 4 p.m. The type of weapon used was not clear, and might have been a pellet gun.

Police confirmed they were searching for a blue estate car which was in the area around the time. Later, some locals claimed the attack may have been less serious than was initially thought; it appeared shotgun pellets had been fired, which would suggest it was not a paramilitary incident.
