The film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had some foundation in fact; Cassidy and the Kid (Harry Longbaugh in real life) did belong to the Wild Bunch, did raid Union Pacific trains, and did decamp to South America. Cassidy was born Robert Leroy Parker, to a devout Mormon family in Utah, but soon took to petty crime and eventually to robbing banks and trains. A curious aspect is that long after his death at the hands of Bolivian soldiers, impostors kept turning up who pretended to be him and were taken seriously. Cassidy and his partner were born some decades too late; by 1900, the Wild West was no longer safe for outlaws.
