Felipe Calderon took power as Mexico's president today but faces a rough reception from leftwing opponents planning to prevent him from being sworn in later in the day.

Calderon replaced outgoing President Vicente Fox, an ally and fellow conservative, in a midnight ceremony at the presidential residence in Mexico City.

Calderon, 44, will face hostility from left-wing opponents - who claim he stole July's election - when he tries to swear in and put on the presidential sash for the first time at a formal ceremony in Congress.
