The use of `For Sale¿ signs and phone numbers on cars by so-called `boy racers¿ to organise road races should be outlawed, a Labour TD said today.

The party¿s spokesman on transport Tommy Broughan said the signs and phone numbers were in some cases being put on car windows to advertise high-speed races on public roads.

The finding was one of a number presented to the Dáil Tranport Committee this week by a group of Transition Year students from S Mary¿s CBS in Tralee.

The project also found that 63.5 per cent of all students surveyed were aware of regular illegal racing in their area.

¿One of the report¿s most disturbing conclusions was a finding that in `boy racer¿ culture, cars with `For Sale¿ signs and numbers printed on them were being used to advertise organised races between `boy racers¿ in the local community,¿ said Mr Broughan.

¿I fully understand that some young drivers have a genuine interest in car mechanics and car racing but it is exceptionally dangerous to have organised racing at excessive speed on our public roads¿.

Mr Broughan called on Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey and Minister for the Environment John Gormley to examine the Racing Kills report.
