A call for Garda drivers to be given special training to reduce the number of accidents, and particularly "hot pursuit" incidents, has been made by the State Claims Agency.

Mr Ciarán Breen, head of claims at the agency, said the number of accidents involving State cars was a source of concern.

Accidents involving members of the Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, the Civil Service and other State bodies are among the top five categories for insurance claims facing the State.

The agency has now entered into discussions with State bodies about how schemes could be implemented for driver courses which would be tailored to specific State workers. Mr Breen said they were talking mainly about Garda cars.

"There would appear to be a very high rate of accident occurrence. One of the reasons would be gardaí in hot-pursuit types of incidents," he said.

"Something radical needs to be done in the way of special training certainly in the Garda from the risk management perspective," he said.

He added that the Defence Forces had good driver training schemes.

The agency's annual report showed approximately 2,000 insurance claims currently facing the State.

The cost of settling the claims was estimated at €100 million.
