Calls to helpline for parents increase dramatically

The number of calls to a helpline for parents has increased significantly in the past year

The number of calls to a helpline for parents has increased significantly in the past year. More than 8,300 people have called Parentline this year, compared with 5,500 for the whole of last year.

The majority of calls - more than one third - were from parents worried about their teenagers. Parents of girls were most concerned about demanding behaviour and aggression in the home.

Parents of boys were more worried about alcohol and school attendance problems. There were also calls from parents concerned that their sons were viewing pornographic material.

An analysis of the calls will not be available until next year. "We do know that the increase in the number of calls has been quite dramatic and it's still only November," said Ms Rita O'Reilly, Parentline manager.

"Part of it is because people have become more aware of the helpline through the media and the advertising campaign," she said.

"But it's quite sad to see the increase in calls after the advertisements because obviously people needed help but didn't know where to go until they saw the publicity."
