Cambodia's Prince Norodom Ranariddh called today for the United Nations (UN) to return to talks on setting up a genocide tribunal for Khmer Rouge leaders.

Prince Ranariddh, who is president of the country's parliament and heads the Royalist Funcinpec Party - part of the ruling coalition - said the UN must return to ensure the trial met international standards.

The UN pulled out of almost five years of talks to set up a joint tribunal in February, claiming the court envisaged by Phnom Penh would not be impartial.

The move stunned many Cambodians and was greeted with dismay by foreign diplomats, who have urged the UN to return to talks.
